The Requiem for a Dream and me

I am an average movie buff. I have seen some of the greatest movies of all times. But the word “GREATEST” became pocket-sized after watching Requiem for a Dream. I was shell shocked and awe-inspired by the sheer beauty of the movie. When this creative masterpiece ended, my mind had gone numb, my senses were not working and there was just one thing on my mind. “What in the name of hell was that?”

Requiem for a Dream is the art of film making at its apex. Now I won’t waste my time and space writing about the story or the characters because it was all beau idéal. So, I am just going to write about the things that are still giving me Goosebumps.

THE EDITING & DIRECTION: First things first, Darren Aronofsky is a genius. The way he used the camera is beyond imagination. Those short shots used throughout the movie with perfect editing, plus the split screens and the extreme close-ups will definitely pull you into a surreal black-hole generated by the movie. The main reason why the scenes are so dark and psychologically challenging is that they are very close to the reality.

THE SCORE: Oh yes, the score. The score. The score. While watching the movie you are completely spell bound to it. And a huge credit for this goes to its score. The movie has the best score I have ever heard. The darkness and the depth in the music strike your mind so badly that you actually start feeling the pain and torment being displayed on screen.  The images in the movie are itself so disturbing and the soundtracks like “Lux Aterno” and “Summer Overture” act like a catalyst to it. The movie would have been nothing without the score.

All I can say is that the movie isn’t fun, the movie isn’t pretty. It is actually very difficult to watch this film because it is the reality. And this is what makes it even more mesmerizing and hence, the best movie of all times.

P.S.- If you didn’t like the movie then I guess you are not mentally ready to watch it.
